A Weekly Running Report After 40: Learning to Run, Recover, and Slow Down
This week gave me a lot to think about.
Some runs felt strong.
Some runs felt easy.
Some runs reminded me to slow down.
And today, I did not run at all.
Instead, I walked.
As a runner in my 40s, I am starting to understand that a good week is not only about how many kilometers I ran.
It is also about how well I listened to my body, how honestly I adjusted my pace, and how much I noticed along the way.
This week had a little of everything.
There were days when I pushed myself enough to feel the training effect.
There were also days when my body gave me small signals.
I felt a little discomfort around my hip on some runs. My calves sometimes felt tight after running. One day, my Garmin watch warned me that my overnight HRV was lower than usual. On another day, I went out planning to run for an hour, but after about 1 kilometer I felt stomach pain, probably because I had eaten dinner too late.
That run taught me something important.
I did not stop, but I did slow down.
And because I slowed down, I started to notice things I usually miss.
I noticed flowers along the path.
I noticed bridge lights I had passed many times before.
I noticed how different the same road can feel when I stop trying to move quickly through it.
That may have been one of the most valuable lessons of the week.
Running after 40 is not only about going farther or faster.
Sometimes, it is about adjusting.
Sometimes, it is about protecting the body before a small signal becomes a bigger problem.
Sometimes, it is about understanding that slowing down is not failure.
It is wisdom.
Today, I did not run.
I walked the path I usually run.
At first, that felt a little strange. The road was familiar, but my pace was different. Without the pressure of a run, the path felt quieter.
And then I saw something unexpected.
I met a toad on the path.

It was such a small moment, but I really liked it.
If I had been running, I probably would have passed by without even noticing it.
But because I was walking, I saw it clearly. I stopped, took a photo, and for a moment I just stood there and looked.
That moment felt like a summary of this week.
This week was not only about performance.
It was also about attention.
Attention to recovery.
Attention to body signals.
Attention to pace.
Attention to the small details that make a run, or even a walk, feel meaningful.
Garmin gives me useful numbers.
It shows me heart rate, pace, training load, sleep data, HRV, and recovery patterns.
I value those numbers more and more.
But this week reminded me that not everything important can be measured by a watch.
Some things are felt in the body.
Some things are learned by slowing down.
And some things are found only when I stop running long enough to really look around.
This week, I ran.
This week, I recovered.
And today, I walked.
That walk did not feel like a break from running.
It felt like part of the same journey.
As I continue running after 40, I want to remember this:
A good week is not only made of strong runs.
It is also made of careful choices, slower days, recovery, and small moments that remind me why I keep going.
This week gave me all of that.
And somehow, meeting a toad on the path felt like the perfect ending.
