Garmin Coach Drill Workout After a Break: Running Again After 40

Garmin Coach Drill Workout After a Break: Running Again After 40

Vacation season and the summer heat kept me away from running for several days.

At first, I thought missing a few workouts would not matter much.

But after a short break, I realized something.

The hardest part is not running fast.

The hardest part is starting again.

Today was my first Garmin Coach drill workout after that break.

I wasn’t trying to run a personal best.

I simply wanted to get my rhythm back.

Workout Structure

Today’s Garmin Coach workout looked like this.

SectionTimePurpose
Warm-up10:00Prepare the body
Drill IntervalsAbout 10 minutesShort bursts with recovery
Cool-down10:03Recover and relax

Unlike a normal easy run, the workout kept changing my rhythm.

Run.

Recover.

Run again.

Recover again.

That constant change is what makes Garmin Coach drill workouts different.

Starting Again Felt Harder Than Running

The funny thing is that today’s pace was not especially difficult.

What felt difficult was simply going outside.

After several days without running, my body wanted another day off.

But once the workout started, everything slowly came back.

My breathing settled.

My legs felt lighter.

The rhythm returned.

Sometimes motivation comes after we begin, not before.

Summer Heat Changes Everything

Today’s average temperature was around 29°C.

That doesn’t sound impossible.

But anyone who has trained during summer knows it feels much harder than the number suggests.

A normal pace suddenly feels uncomfortable.

Recovery takes longer.

Sweat comes earlier.

Today’s run reminded me that summer training is less about chasing pace and more about controlling effort.

Garmin Data Helps Me See More Than Pace

Years ago, I only cared about distance.

Later, I only cared about pace.

Now I look at much more.

Heart rate.

Cadence.

Power.

Ground contact time.

Stride length.

These numbers don’t tell me whether I had a “good” run.

They simply help me understand my body a little better.

That is becoming one of my favorite parts of using Garmin.

Preparing for My Half Marathon

I am following a Garmin Coach half marathon plan.

Every workout has a purpose.

Some days are hard.

Some days are surprisingly easy.

Today’s workout was neither.

It was simply the workout that helped me return after a short break.

Looking back, I think that was exactly what I needed.

My Takeaway

Missing a few workouts does not mean the journey is over.

The important thing is coming back.

Today’s Garmin Coach drill workout was only 4.96 km.

It was not my fastest run.

It was not my longest run.

But it may have been one of the most important runs of this training cycle.

Because today reminded me that consistency is built by returning, not by being perfect.
